Pinging Posts

Postby mccullek » Tue Mar 13, 2012 2:32 am

Jimbo, I currently have the software set to ping only confirmed links. Should I ping every link or is it just best to ping confirmed links? Can you verify if there is any reason for or against pinging every link? For some reason I was thinking I read that we should ping only the confirmed links to reduce footprints, but can't find that now, so I'm just trying to figure out the best practices for pinging links. Any explanation would be helpful.

If users are using AA lists that they know are 100% working (really not a single list anywhere performs anywhere close to 100% but theoretically..) they may wish to save a small amount of time and ping every post. There is no need to ping a page that does not have a link to you, the default setting here is absolutely the best way to go.

When you ping a page you are notifying different search engines and websites that the page has been updated and that it should be looked at, this gets your links noticed much quicker than waiting for the search engines to find them naturally.

What are the default settings? If I have only "Ping confirmed links" checked, then does that slow down the process or does that only ping links that get confirmed? The PDF manual says that checking "active" activates automatic pinging, but if you hold the mouse over active, it's for activating posting to whois sites, so the manual is a bit confusing? Also, hovering the mouse over "ping all posts" and "ping confirmed links?" gives the same exact answer, and that's "checking this box will ping every post and severely slow the process." What is the difference in the two buttons "ping all posts" and "ping confirmed links?" and what does the "active" button over whois have to do with pinging links? Thanks in advance for clarifying these options for me.

Yeah I see that now, it is just a carry over from a long time ago. "Ping Confirmed Links" only pings the posts which result in an auto-approve link, it will slow the posting down slightly as it will have to ping each confirmed link but it is like that as default as it notifies the search engines and other websites that the page has been updated and will get your links noticed much quicker. I will change the description for the next update.

OK, I understood it correctly then, but just wanted verification. Thanks Jimbo!
