Use No Hands SEO with DropBox

Postby sgt_bilko » Sun Jan 22, 2012 12:17 am

This is just a suggestion/request and maybe it's already possible with a bit of ingenuity. I normally run the No Hands SEO on my Mac via Parallels but I have also tried installing it on my Windows laptop and of course none of the settings or profiles are there, so I immediately thought how cool it would be if there was some way to share the database on both computers so they are automatically both in sync and the only possibility I could think of was via DropBox unless there is some other alternative I haven't considered. Would something like this be possible?

I like this idea, the main problem I could see would be in the saving of targets, currently this can take a while on slower computers and I dread to think how long it could take when adding in the latency of an internet connection. It could be done with remote MySQL databases or something similar and that could cut down some of the time taken, it will not be added soon due to other things being a priority right now but thanks for the suggestion I will keep it in mind for a future update.

I wonder if there might be a halfway alternative where the database could be backedup at the end of a session by some means and then made available to the other computer through DropBox or some other means.

I understand that live syncing might be a burden for some but having an option to make the database update available at the start or end of a session shouldn't take excessively long for most people and I wouldn't imagine it uses up too much CPU. I use 1Password on my Mac and when I start up the Windows machine DropBox takes just a few seconds to download and install the updated keychain that is then available to the Windows version of 1Password. Any changes I make while on the Windows machine are then automatically available on the Mac in the same way the next time I use it. The only reason I mention DropBox is because I have experience with this software but I as you have noted I am sure there are other ways this could be done.

Currently the easiest way to share databases between two computers is to copy the DATABASE.db3 file from one computer to the other ensuring that it is copied from and to the correct locations, locations explained below:
Installed version location - My Documents/No Hands SEO
Portable version location - NHSEO working directory

The DATABASE.db3 file contains all profile and settings information so copying this will copy everything.
