Question on Trackbacks

I have a question on Trackbacks. My understanding was that some sites allow trackbacks which allow you a trackback(backlink) on their page WHEN you add a link to your page...Is this correct? If so - how do these trackbacks work? Where/How is the original link generated?

Indeed, trackbacks are normally sent from one blog to notify another blog that the first one had linked to it and that it would be nice if the linked to blog would reciprocate the link. NHSEO will create and send the trackback for you automatically to find blogs that have trackbacks set to auto-approve, some will also be accepted at a later date. There is no original link created in the process and is not necessary to actually send out a trackback.
