Questions about proxies and the latest versions of NHSEO?

Postby jimbobo2779 » Sun Feb 05, 2012 4:14 pm

I do not have the time to address these questions with every user on every forum so I have written this to give an answer once and for all about what the latest changes were and what they mean for NHSEO.

When you updated you will have been greeted with a message that stated "proxies for searching are now very important and will need to be used" and "the next stage will include a built in proxy harvesting system". Yes proxies are currently needed and, yes, a proxy harvester will be added.

Sadly with the change to the new searching system came a bunch of bugs and issues that had to be ironed out before I could even contemplate adding more functionality (proxy harvester) however these bugs are now long gone and the proxy harvester is in its testing phase. I am confident that the proxy harvester will be fully implemented and released later today or, more likely, early tomorrow.

What was this change all about?
Versions of No Hands SEO prior to v1.6.19 would use the Bing API to find relevant target blogs for your links and while this was fine at first it started to return fewer and fewer relevant results meaning less targets and less relevancy. To combat this drop in quality the decision was made to switch to searching Yahoo directly due to its relatively loose search restrictions and high number of relevant results returned.

Why does this change require proxies?
When searching search engines they will only allow X amount of search queries in a given time period, to get around this you need proxies to hide your identity and there is no getting around this.

Is a Proxy Harvester being added?
Yes

When will the Proxy Harvester be added?
It will be released when it is fully tested and working. I am expecting this to be today (5th feb) or tomorrow (6th Feb).

I hope that clears up a few of the more common questions I know people have.

Thanks for your continued development of this app Jim.

It's all too easy for people to whine about minor things. But let's face it. Most software apps (especially from WSOs) are sold once and never updated. This is probably one of the main reasons why plug-ins etc are around in the BH places.

But some developers like yourself are in it for the bigger picture, and I know that your strategy and hard work will pay off big time over the longer term when most other "kinda similar" apps have fallen by the wayside.

Once again, thanks for making this brilliant tool available to everyone :)

The main reason i bought this software of Jim was he said life time updates, that statement alone did it for me.
I didn't know what to expect when i bought it, but i think its fantastic mate. I use one another app but i wont say the name, that also gets updated a lot.
And compared to the other app i use, NHSEO is a few clicks and leave it to do its stuff. I would be proud as punch if i made a app like this, well done Jim.
Ive had some cracking results with this and I'm very happy.
Thanks
Gary.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I hate to delay releases but I am letting the latest update run over night to see how it copes with the new update. If all goes well I will release in the morning.

Yes Thanks Jimbob for working so hard on this.

I am starting to use it now with the minimal settings you indicated in your update.

Under Settings -> Proxy Tab -> Checked "Use Proxies" Check box at the top on the right. For Searching.
I also checked the box at the bottom that says "Continually Update Searching Proxies From File?"

Looking forward to any other suggestions or directions you give for optimum use.

Thanks again! Keep up the great work!

I have just tried out version 1.6.24.0

With the settings recommended.

I am not seeing any comments show up...like before...and I am being prevented by Yahoo from searching anymore.
Below is the error I received.

Do I need to set up proxies for posting as well? Or just for searching?

I look forward to being able to use this tool again. Thanks for everything you are doing JimBob!
Greg

Read below...for error.
EDIT....IT's possible that I missed the checkbox for USE PROXY HARVESTER....DOH! >_<
How long does it take to get unblocked from yahoo search...

If you have the proxy boxes checked, you should be able to search instantly I would think? If not, wait about an hour and you should be OK again, but since it was your real IP that got dinged, if you now have the proxy tool working properly, then all should be good most likely. I had the same issue, missed the main check box for using proxies, so I wasn't using proxy's at first when I thought I was.

Cool update again. I wondered over a few things though right away.

Regarding proxy tab settings:

When Proxy Harvester is being used
  • Does selecting "Use Proxy Harvester" override the proxies listed in the "proxies for searching" box? Or are they blended into the mix?
  • Are the proxies loaded in the "proxies for searching" box tested by the harvester as well?
  • If "Continually load from file" is also selected, is that pointless?
  • Are harvested proxies only used for search? If not then same questions about "proxies for posting" box.

If running a few instances of portable, does it make sense for each one to be doing it's own proxy harvesting?

Limiting by Yahoo lasts 15 minutes or so. I have known it to become de-limited much sooner than this but 15mins is the official number, it may depend on how much you were hammering them.

[QUOTE=revekozu]When Proxy Harvester is being used
1) Does selecting "Use Proxy Harvester" override the proxies listed in the "proxies for searching" box? Or are they blended into the mix?
2) Are the proxies loaded in the "proxies for searching" box tested by the harvester as well?
3) If "Continually load from file" is also selected, is that pointless?
4) Are harvested proxies only used for search? If not then same questions about "proxies for posting" box.[QUOTE]

1) They are added together so if you have 10 private proxies and set the harvester to collect 20 you will essentialy be searching with 30
2) When all options are enabled NHSEO will use the proxies from the box AND the ones from the harvester. Loading proxies from file will over-write the proxies in the box
3) If you are loading proxies from a 3rd party harvester then you need to have this checked otherwise the proxies will not get updated, if you are not using a 3rd party tool you do not need nor want this enabled.
4) harvested proxies are only used for searching. I would never advise using public proxies for posting, they slow the whole process down and result in lots of failed posts and general poor performance overall.

If you are running multiple instances of the portable version you may still need to have the harvesting proxies otherwise you could easily have far too many threads searching using a small bunch of proxies.

If I load a lost of public proxies into the proxies for search, with the harvester enabled, is that list treated as part of the proxy scraper?

I've stopped loading them since I was afraid as they expire they would just be bad or slow things down.

But if there are checked and discarded when bad, then there would be benefit to continuing to load the list when I have time.

This would also reduce the strain on built in proxy sources.
