I wouldn't ever touch the footprints. The footprints in NHSEO are that way because they work well and target the platforms well, if you are unsure if you can use a footprint the best advice I could give would be to not touch them. The huge majority of your footprints would not work so please do not try to use them, your results will suffer greatly.
If you really want to get predominantly .edu or other type of links (I really would not advise this as it is an incredibly unnatural linking pattern) you can use the Profile Handler to target one domain more than others. You can do this by going to Profile Handler, choose your profile and then in the "Profile specific Settings" tab use the "Domain Specific Searching" option to enter in the domains that you wish to target.
Even though there is functionality to do what you want it is highly advised thatyou not do this because, as mentioned previously, it will create a very unnatural linking pattern that would be easy to discern from a website with a realistic linking pattern.
