How many different services get pinged with each new url added in the "pinger"?

What are they?

Do the "pings" themselves, create backlinks to the submitted pages on each of the resources that are contacted?

Most won't generate links, it is more to notify the different websites and search engines that the content of those pages have been updated. This updates whatever listing is on those websites more quickly.
